In the fall, Mr. Johnson will be attending Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He accumulated over $78,000 in scholarships and financial aid to support his college journey. In High School, he served as Class President, DECA Vice President of Competitive Events, Ethics Bowl Captain, and participated in various volunteer work opportunites and programs such as SCS Noonan Scholars. Zahavi won South Carolina’s DECA’s Entrepreneurship competition and Ethics Bowl, and currently holds office at the state level for the State Youth Leadership Program.

Mr. Johnson says that Summer Youth Works taught him the importance of professionalism, from handling tasks and one-on-one interaction to small things like building a resume and writing professional emails. In addition to this, his time working for the Royal Foundation in the Royal Summer Academy taught him how to work with kids, how to find ways to be helpful and helped him develop emotional intelligence because he had to manage a lot of personalities. These lessons serve as inspiration for his professional pursuits. We know it’s only up from here for Zahavi!

Ty’Shara graduated from Military Magnet, where she was a member of the Drill Team. While volunteering at her (now) job site, she made such an impression on the team that they recommended her to the Palmetto CAP Summer Youth Works program and encouraged her transition to being on the South Carolina State Council. We know that Ty’Shara will continue to let her bright spirit shine as she plans to attend South Carolina State University this fall!

As part of summer youth works, Destanee learned the importance of adaptability. She says it is important to be able to be flexible in all situations in order to persevere and accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. It can be helpful to set smaller goals and it’s sometimes okay for our larger goals to change. What is important is to remember what is important to us and to keep working towards that even in changing circumstances. We see big things in her future!
